ESG regulations are government standards for ESG-related actions, reporting, or disclosures. ESG stands for environmental, social, and governance, and it is a framework for evaluating the sustainability and ethical impact of a company or investment.

From 2025, companies will be required to report on ESG. That is because that is when the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will come into force. The CSRD is part of the European Green Deal and is the successor to the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD).

Which companies will be affected by CSRD? 

CSRD applies to all EFTA companies exceeding at least two of the following criteria: (1) a net turnover of €40 million; (2) a balance sheet total of €20 million;(3) 250 employees on average over the financial year.

What information must be reported under CSRD?

CSRD requires reporting of forward-looking, retrospective, qualitative and quantitative information necessary to understand the companies impacts on sustainability matters.

When will CSRD start applying?

The application of CSRD will take place in four stages. Stage 1 involves reporting in 2025 for the financial year 2024 for companies already subject to the NFRD.

Why has CSRD been passed now?

Put simply, the EU believes that consumers and investors deserve to know the sustainability impact of businesses, and CSRD was created because the existing legislation wasn’t cutting it.
